Autobiographical Sketch 2012 Gary William Coleman

I was born in Davenport, IA (Dec. 1945) and grew up across the river in Illinois. My first 18 years was divided among a city, a small town, a farm, and back to the same city. I graduated from Galesburg Sr. High School (June 1964). In January 1969, I earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Arizona State University(Tempe, AZ). That summer, I enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for four years and was Honorably Discharged from active duty in 1973.

In Dec. 1973, Janice Jamtgaard (Beresford) and I were married in her home church: Emmanuel Lutheran. We resided in Albert Lea, MN for our first six years of marriage. A highlight of those years was our employment at Yellowstone National Park during the Summer of 1976 (our nation's Bicentennial Year). By far the most significant highlight was the birth of our daughter, Heidi, in Albert Lea (Sept. 1977). With my father's help, I built a home in Alcester, SD(1979). We would live there for the next eight years. During that time, our son, Sean, was born in August 1981. Also, I earned a second college degree from the University of South Dakota; Vermillion, SD (B.S. in Elementary Education, May 1987). We moved to Wagner, SD in 1988 until purchasing our present home in Dante (1992).

From 1973-1987, I was involved in a variety of jobs. From 1987 to the Present, I have been a Certified Elementary Teacher. I have been an active teacher twenty of those years. Most of those years were divided between Marty (SD) Elementary (7 yrs.) and Parkston (SD) Elementary (9 Years). I am currently retired from the profession, but have helped schools in the area fill gaps in emergency circumstances.

My wife, Janice, earned a B.A. in Special Education from Augustana College (Sioux Falls) in 1971. She has been an active teacher for approximately thirty years. She has served Wagner Community School as a Board Member for nine years, served the South Dakota Retirement System(SDRS) for two years, and has held several leadership positions in the Wagner American Legion Auxiliary for the past ten years.

Our two children are both graduates of Wagner Community High School. Our daughter, Heidi, went on to earn a B.S. in Physical Education from the University of South Dakota; Vermillion, SD (Dec. 2000). She has taught in the Pueblo (CO) School District for ten years. Heidi earned a M.S. in Physical Education from Colorado State (Pueblo) in May 2011. She is married with two school aged children, and they reside in Pueblo West, CO. Our son, Sean, earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (May 2005). He has been employed by Cargill, Inc. as an engineer since his graduation. He is married with three preschool children, and they reside in Breckenridge, MN.

My professional and community leadership includes terms in the Parkston Education. Assn. as Vice-President and President. In the American Legion, I served at the post level (Baseball Director and Historian) and district level (Vice-Commander and Commander). I am currently serving on the Yankton Concert Assn. Board of Directors and VA(Veterans Administration) Sioux Falls Regional Telehealth Committee.

Janice and I have been residents of South Dakota for thirty-three of our thirty-eight years of marriage. We have been residents of District 21 for twenty-four years.
